RID Announces Degree Requirement Extension for Hearing Candidates for Certification

"The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) announced today it will be extending the deadline requiring an associate's degree for hearing candidates for certification from June 30, 2008 to June 30, 2009. The one year extension will enable the national office to ensure that the proper procedures are in place to handle and assess alternative pathway requests (i.e., equivalent alternative criteria allowable in lieu of the educational requirements) ...."

Upcoming EIPA Deadlines

In general, EIPA tests require registration at least one month ahead of time. Please make sure that you register in plenty of time for the testing.


ISRID Mentorship Partnership Update

ISRID Mentorship Partnership Update -- NEXT PROPOSAL DEADLINE: DECEMBER 14, 2007

In trying to increase the number of licensed by examination sign language interpreters in the state of Iowa and for the continuing education of all sign language interpreters, the Iowa Mentoring Partnership is requesting proposals for workshops. The Iowa Mentoring Partnership is a collaboration between the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa School for the Deaf, the Iowa State Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, the Interpreter Training Programs at Kirkwood Community College, Scott Community College, and Iowa Western Community College, and the Deaf Services Commission of Iowa, Iowa Department of Human Rights.

Our mission is to initiate, sponsor, promote, and execute policies and activities that will further the profession of interpreters of American Sign Language and transliteration of English.

Our Objectives are as follows:

  • To maintain and promote the Code of Ethics of the RID, Inc., for interpreters and transliterators
  • To encourage and promote training opportunities for interpreters and transliterators through continuing education seminars and workshops in cooperation with existing interpreter training programs
  • To support and promote the National Testing System's certification and testing policies and procedures
  • To provide the public with information about interpreting and transliterating
  • To disseminate information to the membership
  • To support the activities of organizations of and for deaf people insofar as such activities are not in conflict with the purpose of this organization
  • To raise funds to support the purposes and activities of this organization

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) uphold high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct for interpreters. Embodied in this Code of Professional Conduct (formerly known as the Code of Ethics) are seven tenets setting forth guiding principles.

Interpreters who are members in good standing with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. and the National Association of the Deaf voted to adopt this Code of Professional Conduct, effective July 1, 2005. ISRID members accept, support, and comply with the following Professional Code of Conduct. More details on this Code of Conduct is available in PDF format.

  1. Interpreters adhere to standards of confidential communication.
  2. Interpreters possess the professional skills and knowledge required for the specific interpreting situation.
  3. Interpreters conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to the specific interpreting situation.
  4. Interpreters demonstrate respect for consumers.
  5. Interpreters demonstrate respect for colleagues, interns, and students of the profession.
  6. Interpreters maintain ethical business practices.
  7. Interpreters engage in professional development.

University of Northern Colorado Announces New Program

The University of Northern Colorado will launch a new Leadership and Supervision Training program in the Spring of 2008. The University describes it as follows:

The UNC-DO IT Center designed the Leadership & Supervision Certificate Program to prepare individuals for rapidly changing professional environments, such as VRS and education. A first-of-its-kind program, it is delivered to professionals in interpreting who seek new levels of responsibility in their careers, who find themselves serving in leadership roles but needing more preparation, or who enjoy interaction with professional peers discussing cutting edge issues.

The program involves 4 semesters of online courses which will result in 12 undergraduate or graduate credits from the University of Northern Colorado plus 18 CEUs from RID. Upon successful completion of the program, you will earn a Certificate of Professional Studies.
